How can I work with my township to change who they use for animal control?

This animal control facility has been used by the township for many years. But, myself and many other residents have complained about their callous catch and kill policy. They even put a man's dog to sleep, even though, the dog had tags on. Another older dog they took was put down despite the fact someone wanted to adopt her. The last straw for me was this week when they killed our neighborhood cat. We were all trying to save this cat. We offered to pay any fines. We found an indoor home for her and offered to sign any papers releasing them of any liablilty. But, they were nasty and callous, and smugly told us the very hour they were putting the cat down. Animal lovers everywhere need to find a better solution to this archaic system of animal control. I would appreciate any ideas.

In our town, where the animal shelter also perpetrated such horrors on innocent animals, we enlisted the help of as many of the local rescue/humane organizations as we could. (go to www.petfinder.com for a list of humane rescues in your area) We wrote letters and organized protests. We made signs, wrote letters to newspapers and also to the local media. Many animal control officers are elected officials, so you can also go to your city government.0 -

You really need to understand the complexity of the situation before you do much of anything, other than starting to organize (which izzy has given great ides.) Before you can change anything, you need to understand what is going on. 1) Find out teh laws in your town and state regarding shelters, euthinzation, holding policies for lost pets, etc. 2) when you know the state and local laws, then find out the SPECIFICS of the shelter's policies. before you can do anything, you need to know what laws and policies are being broken, and by whom. Is it the shelter's policies that are poor, or is it individuals within the shelter that are breaking shelter laws. Is the shelter itself acting within the state or local law guidlines? If so, you may have to actually change laws. Or, if they are not, you can contact the authorities and turn them in. Either way, you must find out the laws that apply to this shelter, as well as its own policies, then you can move from there!0
