I\'m dealing with FHL :-(

My momma took me to the vet a week ago Thursday because I stopped eating. They did all kinds of stuff took my temperature, my blood work, urine sample, and x-rays. Then they took me over to the vet specialist to get a sonogram because they thought I might have fatty liver syndrome. Since we found out, that is what I had, they placed a PEG tube for feeding and an IV. They started giving me Reglan for the nausea, because I felt sick all the time. And Cisapride for my digestion. I'm still vomiting, and my mom hasn't been able to increase my food intake very much thus far. (I'm eating blended A/D) I sleep a lot and don't have much energy, but I do enjoy getting out of the kitchen to wander around sometimes. I have had a few bowel movements recently and that makes my mom very happy. That means stuff is finally moving through my system...slowly but surly. They started to give me Clavamox to insure the PEG tube site wasn't getting infected, (I had some fat necrosis but it started to look better quickly) but the antibiotics only made me feel more sick and caused me to throw up. I am glad they said the site looks good, and I won't have to have that stuff anymore. Does anyone have any advice for my mom? She loves me very much and wants to do everything possible to get me better soon! Oh and they tried out L Carnitine, but that only made me sick. The vet said this was the first thing to go off of my diet. We haven't tried Taurine yet, because I haven't gotten this vomiting thing under control. What are your thoughts about Milk Thistle? My vet hasn't mentioned it, but my mom thought it might help. We're going to try Pepcid AC 1/2 a tablet once a day to see if that helps. Wish me luck!

First, I hope everything goes well for you. We are purrrring for you here at my house. When I first got sick (about 6 months before I came to the Rainbow Bridge) I had a PEG tube also. (I had kidney disease, so that is different, but lots of the symptoms are similar). Pepcid AC helped my stomach a lot (I took a quarter of a tablet every day). Hope it works for you. Purrrrrs from the whole family

Thank you Bee Jay and Hazel Lucy! I appreciate the good thoughts and purrrs. I can't wait to get back to my old self again. In fact today I started noticing the water my mom left out for me, and almost decided to take a drink. I started purring while she was feeding me and started getting comfortable. I only sniffed at some hard food but it just didn't seem appetizing. Maybe soon I'll feel up to trying some real food. My mom put up a recent picture of me. They made me wear this dumb blue sweater, but at least they took off the hot pink wristband (from the IV)! They always call me a girl at the vet...sheesh.

I just wanted to do a little update for everyone. I haven't thrown up in 2 days!!! My mom is incredibly happy to see progress. She increased my food intake and I seem to be doing ok with more stuff in my tummy. I love all of this mom time I'm getting, sometimes I purrrr while she's feeding me. Who knew I could sleep and "eat" at the same time! (well via tube feeding anyway) My mom tried putting a little A/D on a plate since the vet told her to offer food once a day to see if I feel like eatting. Since I didn't eat on my own she put a little on her finger and wiped some on my upper lip/nose for a taste. I licked for a while to try and get that stuff off, and I didn't get nauseous or anything! So keep your fingers crossed for me! Purrrs all around! Meow!

Hey MuShu! Glad to hear you're doing a little better! When I won't eat, my mums tries things like baby food (make sure there are no onions in it though) and plain yogurt. Yogurt is full of good bacteria and sometimes settles our stomachs when we don't feel good. Hope you keep it up. We're purring for you!

Hello MuShu, I just accepted your friend request and sent you this message but not sure if it went through so posting here as well. I would love to be friends. Please know that FLD (Fatty Liver Disease) can be beat. It isn't easy but it can definitely be done. The most important thing is that your mom gets enough food in you. FEEDING IS THE CURE! Check the website for Hills A/D and see how much you should be getting to support your nutritional needs. It's usually a lot more than you would think. Please let me know if I can be of help. I have not had any recurring problem with my appetite since my bout with FLD and would love to help another kitty if I can. --- also --- now I see you are on a feeding tube. I didn't have that but I think the same is true, that you have to be getting enough food in, that's really what it comes down to. I threw up A LOT but we'd just feed again on schedule. It was awful to go through and really stressful for my mom but we pulled through and you will too. If you have a lot of nausea try fewer meals more often that can help some if you are home and can do that or even on days off from work. Whatever it takes. Purring for you and please keeps us updated.

Not sure why that double posted. Anyhoo, wanted to add to your mom to keep giving you a little taste of the food on the finger every time you feed, the reason I say this is our vet actually said one of the risks with the tube is that cats are just \"full\" from the belly and it can be harder to get them back to eating on their own because they don\'t associate the eating with the full feeling. So I think it may help MuShu to still gets a little tiny \"taste\" along with the full feeling so that he keeps that association. Hope that helps.

Boxer, My mom says many thanks for the great tips! She am just so happy to see that I haven't vomited! (day 3 NO VOMIT!! yay!) Now I'll turn it over to my momma: We'll definitely have to try a taste of food before feeding. I think he's really getting to where he should be, he's getting 40ml's of food 3 times today. The target is 50ml's 3 times a day until he starts eating again. So he's making good progress. The vet had me blend up 3 cans of A/D and one can of water...so thats what he's been eating. Also metoclopamide (aka reglan) every 8 hours, cisapride every 12 hours, and half of a 10mg tablet of Pepcid AC once a day. The thing I was worried about was the food that I was offering him to get his appetite going, isn't his favorite. In fact I think he didn't like the food very much, I was about to switch him over before this happened. I did however get a sample of Life's Abundance (he was eating Natural Balance Low Calorie dry kibble- NOT the venison and pea dry food that's on the recall list) from my friend that started giving her cat and her cat loved the stuff. It seems to be a good choice. So I'm going to try that with him. Also someone suggested baby food (without onions) or yogurt. I'd like it to be something he'd normally eat though. He doesn't even really care for soft food usually. Anyway, thanks again. The support is sooo very needed and appreciated. Thanks for all the purrrrrrs and as usual, keep your paws crossed for him! |^| I hope all is well where all of you meowers are! Love MuShu, and mom

I'm glad you are not vomiting!!! Your mom should offer you whatever food you like typically. If this is a dry food, fine. The goal is to get you eating again. After you start eating food again on your own, then she can work on getting you to eat the proper kinds of food. I know it's a long battle, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Food is the cure. Many purrs for you!

I\'ve been so good and my momma is soooooo proud of me! I\'ve been tasting a little liquified A/D before/during feeding, like my bud Boxer suggested. My mom decided to put some on the back of her hand and I started LICKING it off all by MYSELF! She was so pleased she was kissin me all over and petting me and telling me I was such a good boy. Thanks for the puuuuuurrrrrrrrrs my kitty friends! MEOW! %:D%

While left at home to my own devices, I started munchin on the little buffet my mom left out for me. Three different kinds of hard food...one was the kind I was eating before (Natural Balance Low-Calorie recipe), one was Life's Abundance that my mum got from a friend and one new kind, Nutro Natural Choice. I went back to the stuff I was eating before this whole fatty liver thing happened. I also tried out some of the Life's Abundance when my old stuff was gone! My mom was soooo happy....lovin on me and kissin me all over! She even let me wander around the apartment until it was time for bed. She was worried I might get into trouble being out overnight with the feeding tube and all. The tube site must be itchy, because I'm rubbin all over stuff to relieve myself. I wish I could get this dang thing out now! But momma says I've got 6 more days of eating on my own and then I'll be good to go! YIPPIE!!!

Hi Mushu. I'm another kitty with fatty liver disease. I'm lucky in that i don't have to go through a stomach tube. I'm eating a little bit 3 to 4 times a day. It's not enough really but i'm getting there. I go to the vets again on Saturday morning and see what the vet thinks. She's also going to show mu meowmy how to syringe feed me.... that doesn't sound like fun. the vet wants to hold off on it if they can coz i am interested in eating small amounts. Only from hand feeding though. Purrs from Freddy and Kiara

Freddy, How long has your mom known you got fatty liver disease? We didn't have to do the biopsy, just a sonogram and that concluded that I had FHL. I wouldn't touch a thing and force feeding/hand feeding was not an easy task. Even though it was an undertaking, the tube was really a good thing because it allowed my mom to pump pleanty of food into me without me being the wiser. I'm sorry that you have this nasty disease, it isn't fun and mom agrees. It's hard to get enough feedings in the day for her and to work a full time job. But we're getting there. I've been eating, and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. For a while mum was really scared for me. But I'm a strong kitty. I hope you get better very very soon and then maybe we can play together? What do you say to that?! Meeee-yoww! MuShu

hi Mushu. Latest news is i'm also being force fed now. Hills Science Diet a/d. The vet would like me to eat a 5.5oz can a day. So meowmy is trying to get 10ml each feed. Does that sound right to you? :? Meowmy is trying to find out what my tummies capacity would be so she knows what we need to work up to without me being sick. Kiara is being a psycho b**ch from hell. She'd started to leave me alone but another trip to the vet and now she hates me again.:((:?
