AP story: Bush family's 18-year-old cat dies The first family leaving the White House this month will be without one of its longtime members: the Bush family's 18-year-old cat has died. The first lady's office said Monday that India, a black American shorthair named for former Texas Rangers player Ruben Sierra, died Sunday at the White House. Bush daughter Barbara, then 9, named the cat "India" after Sierra, a former major league player, whose nickname was "El Indio." President George W. Bush was a former co-owner of the Texas Rangers. India was very pretty. Why is it the press always concentrates on the dogs of the First Family and we never hear about or see their cats? :-k

You're right about that, Aragorn. :-/ I try to give them the benefit of a doubt and assume it's because dogs are more visible to people who live outside the household? :? Remember Socks? He got a little media coverage when there was no dog to hog the show. ;)

Sad to hear about Indias passing. But it sounds like she lived a long and very pampered life. I wonder if she had her own secret service agent? I didn't even know the Bushs had a cat........all we ever get to see was Barney the dog. I too hope the Obamas get a cat to live in the white house with them and their new dog. Didnt Barrack say he was a uniter? RIP India

Thanks for letting us know, Ben. India is a beautiful kitty - it's true she (and other White House cats) never got the press attention that the family dogs did. Purrs and condolences to the Bush family. Purrs, Felix & Critter |/a/|

And what were they feeding it? If they were feeding premium or raw, the cat could have lived to be 30. Shame, shame!

(copied this from the article:) When Bush daughters Barbara and Jenna went to college, the cat stayed at the White House with the president and first lady. The family affectionately called the cat "Kitty." this reporter actually thought it newsworthy to tell us thatIndia was affectionately known as "kitty"? surely somebody has more dirt on the First Cat than that! (i was looking for some sort of eulogy...still looking...sorry, chibi, no idea (yet) what India's diet was...)

Bush's cat India gets Indians enraged Yahoo! India News ^ | July 2, 2004 | Indo-Asian News Service Posted on Sat 10 Jul 2004 10:09:06 PM EDT by k2blader Friday July 2, 4:15 PM Bush's cat India gets Indians enraged By Indo-Asian News Service Thiruvananthapuram, July 2 (IANS) Angry youths in this Kerala capital Friday burnt an effigy of US President George W. Bush, not because they are anti-American but because he has named his cat India. Members of the citizens group Prathikarana Vedi assembled before the Kerala assembly saying that Bush calling his cat India was an insult to the country. (tell me...how many of you would care if india's prime minister named his or her cat "america"?) "This is a disgrace to our great country and this has come from none other than US President George W. Bush. This is nothing but an insult to India because there are hundreds of thousands of Indians in US, and many who occupy key posts in the White House," said M.A. Latheef, president of the group. "He should make amends," Latheef added. The members of the group walked to the front gate of the assembly building but were stopped by police. After a brief speech and some slogans, the members burnt an effigy of the US president (show of paws: who here would actually care if india's prime minister named his or her cat "america"? and i read another article where hundreds of indians named their dogs "bush" in protest for the bush's cat being named "india"...there are now hundreds of dogs named bush in india...poor doggies:( )

and now in the "people with too much time on their hands" category: Islamic militants ridicule death of Bush cat By MAAMOUN YOUSSEF – Jan 6, 2009 CAIRO, Egypt (AP) — Islamic militants posted sarcastic comments on an extremist Web site Tuesday ridiculing a recent announcement by First Lady Laura Bush that the family's cat had died. The online comments were unusual on the site that usually focuses on official statements by al-Qaida and other militants. Commentators, who must be registered members of the site, frequently post their opinions, but normally the topics are humorless. But on Tuesday, one commentator, called Dark-Side, sarcastically urged followers to offer condolences for the cat. "For God's sake, could someone tell us where the wake is to be held?" the online commentator wrote. A few also poked fun at Arab leaders allied with the United States. "This is not the right time to die. It is a dilemma for the Arab leaders at this time because they are busy and have to leave the region to offer condolences" in Washington, wrote another commentator. But others objected to discussing such lighthearted topics because of the Israeli offensive in Gaza. "We are sad at this time and publishing this only increases our sorrow," wrote a commentator. The first lady's office said Monday that the family's 18-year-old cat, named India, died Sunday at the White House

I saw some of the articles about people in India being upset about the Bush cat's name, even though she wasn't named for their country at all. Silly! And to the "Islamic militants": Mohammed was a cat lover!|^| Mohammed and his beloved cat Muezza: "Islam legend tells us that Mohammed loved cats. One story says that he once cut off a sleeve of a garment when he had to leave to attend prayer, rather than to disturb his cat, Muezza, who was sleeping upon the sleeve. It is said that the reason he loved cats so much is that one once saved his life when a snake crawled into his sleeve. (This may be a variation of the well-known Muezza story.) Legend also claims that Mohammed bestowed on cats the ability to always land on their feet. These stories have all come down to the assumption that the "M" symbolizes the enormous esteem which Mohammed felt for cats and that the sight of the "M" on a cat's forehead invokes memories of Mohammed. In any case, cats today are still generally protected and respected in the Islamic world, and are even permitted inside mosques." Furthermore: "The Prophet Muhammad taught mercy to all of God’s creation. There are many reports of his love for cats resulting in their historical acceptance among Muslims. Cats were very common among the people during the time of the Prophet, and he said, “They (cats) are not impure and they intermingle with you.” The cat is such a clean animal that according to authentic narrations one may make ablution for Prayer with the same water that a cat drank from. Yet, it is known that some people nowadays have opposed the traditions of the Prophet by taking up the evil practices of torturing and poisoning cats. In Islam, punishment for such acts is severe. Both Al-Bukhari and Muslim reported a hadith regarding a woman who locked up a cat, refusing to feed it and not releasing it so that it could feed itself. The Prophet Muhammad said that her punishment on the Day of Judgment will be torture and Hell." Would they have ridiculed Mohammed for grieving upon the death of his beloved kitty Muezza? I don't think so!

Rest In Peace, India |:| I didn't even know the Bush family had a cat. But maybe it was India's choice not to have the attention of the media. Cats are smart ;) Sounds like she had a nice long life and even part of it living in the White House!
