Most cat diseases are airborne or spread through contact with litter boxes. However, you can contract ringworm from contact. Carpeted furniture would be difficult to clean throroughly to give you peace of mind. You can vaccum it and spray it with Lysol and/or flea spray, but that's no guarantee. Cat furniture is often carpeted wood and wood absorbs all kinds of nasty stuff. If you got the stuff from a friend whose cats you know are healthy, then I wouldn't worry. But if you got it resale or from a garage sale, then I'd take a look at it. Does it seem beat up and dirty? Does it smell? If the answer is yes, then I'd just buy new to be safe.
