What you have is an abused cat. Even if the abuser was a 5 year old child who meant him no harm and just played roughly with him, that's still abuse. Hopefully, this child will be taught how to treat animals, because in the future an animal may retaliate and scar the child for the rest of it's life. If your kitty is showing the effects of this abuse, you will need to take it very slowly and be very patient with him. Under no circumstances should he be exposed to children until he has regained his confidence. It's better if you, and just you, work with this kitty. Play with him, cuddle him, give him someone to 'attach' to. When he is comfortable with you, then expose him to others who may be in your family. They, too, need to be calm and quiet with him. If he hides, don't drag him out of his hiding place. Let him come to you. You will need to protect and advocate for this kitty. You must prove to him that not everyone will treat him like the child did.
