my kitten has a brownish red dirt in her ears and seems pretty painful when i try to clean them out,

    If is has the consistency of coffee grounds then it is probably from ear mites. I would take her to the vet to see what's wrong. If left untreated it can cause an ear infection which can cause hearing loss.

    She has ear mites. Don't try to use anything over the counter with her, as that stuff just does not work. Take her to the vet, they'll be able to give her something that is actually effective. Don't wait too long, untreated ear mite infestations can lead to ear infections, which untreated can lead to hearing damage.
