I am not a groomer and can only speak from experience, having two long-haired cats, Delilah and Lizzie. I took a lot of heat from this website a few years ago when I had Delilah shaved. Well, she did look awful, but it was preferable to trying to cut out the mats, having her pull them out, or dealing with skin infections or possibly cutting her skin with scissors. If your cat is THAT bad, you do need to see a professional cat groomer. Once she is dematted, keep up with the daily brushing. As for losing her fur, she may need to visit with her vet to find out if there's anything going on with her health.
