How to get an elderly cat to start using the litter box again.

We have two cats, both females. One's getting up there in age and the other is about two years old. The younger cat enjoys attacking the older cat, climbing on top of her and biting her in the ear, chasing her around the house, butting in front of her at the water dish or food, etc. The older cat just puts up with it, doesn't put up much of a fight. Lately however, she hasn't been using the litter box properly. I read on another site where it said, "If you have more than one cat, is the cat in question intimidated or chased by one of your other cats? If so, the scared cat might feel too vulnerable to use the litter boxes in the present location." This is very much the case. What can be done to get her to use the litter box again?

First, be sure that the older cat checks out health-wise by taking her to the vet. Older cats, like older people, need more attention from the vet, especially when they start exhibiting unusual behaviors. You will need to run interference for your older cat. The younger one is bullying her and that needs to stop. Distract the younger one before she starts bullying the older one by playing with her. When she starts "attacking" the older one, remove her from the situation and try putting her in a room for "time out". Don't yell at her or spray her b/c you'll be scaring the older one, too and it's not her fault. Make sure they each have their own box in different locations if possible. Supervise the younger one so she doesn't hassel the older one while she's in the box. I'm sure this is why the older one has stopped using the box. The younger one thinks SHE is the pack leader, but with gentle firmness, you need to let her know that YOU are.
