2 year-old cat is pooping on bed and now sofa - help!

I don't know what to do about this and I really want to avoid rehoming our adorable male cat. We have two cats. Peetie, the male (2-years old) has always been needy, crying for us at night, sitting at our bedroom door and wailing. Both were house trained from an early age and always great with the litter trays - which are kept clean and in a private and quiet location of the apartment. About a year ago, Peetie started pooping and peeing on our bed after we'd been away for a weekend... we put this down to anxiety and marking where he smelled us after being separated for those few days. This has happened on and off since then. But now the problem seems to be getting worse with seemingly no rhyme or reason. He will sporadically poop and pee on the spare bed (not just our own bed which we try to keep him away from). And even worse, he has now started to do it on our sofa - which we thought was a safe area and not when we've been away. What can we do? Help!
