I haven 2, 7 week old foster kittens who I have raised since they were born. When they were younger they had to be separated into different crates as the smaller one, aki, liked to suck on his brother T’Challas’ hoo ha, and was refusing to drink KMR and was losing weight. He has since grown out of that behavior. During their seperation both kittens were fed separately alone in their respective crates and have never had competition for food with each other but for some reason T’Challa has become food agressive/protective. He will put his whole body in the dish, and if his brother or my hand comes near the dish he scrambles to protect his food, sometimes he growls as well if you try to remove the bowl or him from the food. Even when no one is near he still gets so frantic over food that he flings it all over and half of it goes to waste. This food aggression behavior can not continue as both kittens are now old enough to be in the same crate. I would like to be able to leave food in there for when I am sleeping or at work, but I can’t be do that if only one kitten gets to eat and wastes half the food in doing so as that defeats the whole purpose of leaving food in the crate.
Please help with this food aggression behavior he is SO young to have this aggression and I feel if it’s not nipped in the bud now it will continue as he gets older.
He is otherwise a VERY sweet kitten! He loves to snuggle and regularly falls asleep near my face as I pet him. He doesn’t even really like roughhousing with his brother.
