Dear Catster reader,

Almost two years ago, we invested numerous resources and rebuilt the Catster community. With new hardware, software and personnel, we did our best to satisfy the many users who shared their thoughts, pictures, questions, and love for and of their pets with us and friends. It was a thriving community with many users. We hoped, however, there would be more like you.

Times and habits have changed and we are sad to announce that the Catster community will be closing down on July 20, 2019.

Catster magazine, and the associated social media sites are NOT shutting down. We encourage you to continue reading the content found in the pages of the magazine and the web sites, commenting through the mechanisms provided and sharing your ideas and comments with us and your fellow readers.

Instructions for accessing pet profiles were shared with everyone in 2017. The instructions can be found elsewhere within the forum. AFTER JULY 20TH, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS THIS CONTENT. And, effective immediately, we are no longer able to answer questions about the community.

Thank you for your support and we look forward to serving you through our magazine and website.

Addicted to A/D

I was sick a couple of months ago and lost my appetite so mum got some A/D from the vets. That tempted me to eat and I\'m all better again now but the A/D is so tasty I now refuse to eat anything else. I get fed twice a day and mum has tried other food but I ignore it and eat nothing until I\'m given A/D. She has left me up to 24 hours with the food that I won\'t eat before she cracks and give me a meal of A/D. She\'s tried several different foods and every few days will try a new food in the morning and when I don\'t eat anything give me A/D in the evening. I am getting enough to eat and mum is making sure I\'m not losing weight and at risk from that. So far mum has tried Innova, Wellness and Halo dry food and Tiki Cat, Trader Joes, Merricks and Innova wet food. She\'s also tried Gerber chicken baby food, roast chicken and canned tuna. Mum is going to pick up some Friskies and Fancy Feast on the way home tonight but if that doesn\'t work she will have tried everything she can think of. I was never a fussy cat before and happily ate the Wellness dry food and then the Innova Low Fat dry food I was on before and had canned food occaisionally as a treat. Has anyone got any other ideas how to wean me off the A/D?

Oh, I feel your pain. I live in Japan where I am having trouble finding good canned food for my cats. The only one that says it is not nutritiously balanced is a/d. But it costs $4.00 a can, and right now I have 16 cats (eight are kittens waiting for new homes). The Momcat and kittens get a/d, but the other cats, sorry, get kibble. I don't have any advice on how to solve your problem. Hill's products are not considered the best of the best, but a/d is a nutrient rich food. Maybe your kitty really needs it, even now. I don't know how expensive a/d is where you live, but if you can afford it, hey, it's better than having your cat reject any and every food. Sending purrs your way...

Science Diet a/d is basically a medicine and a food of last resort, it is NOT formulated to be a regular diet for a cat. I think you're just going to have to practice tough love for a longer period of time. I can't see a cat literally starving itself... Have you tried mixing the a/d with another wet food? Mix it in really well so he can't pick out the a/d. Then gradually decrease the amount of a/d mixed in.
