You don't say how old your cat is, but when cats are neutered when they're older, they can still spray. Usually the cause of this is going to a new house (you said he came to live with you only a month ago), feeling threatened by other animals, and probably even marking over where the other animals may have gone. You can also check with your vet to see if he has impacted anal glands, but he wouldn't be spraying, he'd be dragging his hind end on the carpet. That's not real common in cats, but it's worth a check. Also check with your vet to see if he might have a urinary tract infection which is the #1 cause of spraying or peeing outside the litter box. Make sure his box itself is very clean. When you clean the stains, make sure you use an enzyme based cleaner like Natures Miracle or Simple Solution. That works better. Also, you might want to try Feliway--a plug in pheromone scent that calms the cat down and makes him not want to spray. You can get all this stuff at PetsMart.
