Has anyone had experience with kidney failure?

My older "family" cat that lives with my Dad was just diagnosed. We believe him to be about 16. The Dr says that other than the beginnings of the kidney failure he's in great health for his age. We've been told that a special diet made to help his kidneys will make him feel better. This is the very early stages, but we weren't given a time frame as to whether or not we have months or years left. Just looking for other experiences to help us through. Thanks!

My beloved male had kidney failure at about twelve years old. First one kidney not great, then the other failing, mostly due to aging. I nearly lost him, he was not eating. Gave him tagamet for nasea and small dose of Prednisone and tried special food which he hated of course, so I fed him(and cooked) whatever he'd eat. The meds and spoiling him rotten gave me another 3 years with him. Your family kitty is old, but you may still have years. My mom's cat is going to be 18 and his kidneys are slowly failing. It's hard to say how long but be optomistic.
