Most vets will neuter a male kitten at six months of age. Some spay and neuter clinics and animal welfare organizations endorse early desexing of animals as young as 6 weeks of age. As long as the animal is healthy and reaches the recommended weight for the surgery, there is no reason not to do it that young and since some cats reach early puberty, it's probably a better idea to have it done younger. Shelters began the juvenile spay/neuter when people adopted a young animal, promised to bring the animal back in for neuter/spay and then never did. The results of that can be seen in the extreme overpopulation of animals in our country today. Now, most shelters have adopted a juvenile spay/neuter program and only adopt out "fixed" animals. The recovery rate for juvinile spay/neuters is the same as for "older" kittens.

Izzie is completely right. My Atrus was neutered at 12 weeks and recovered within the day practically. Some vets do not do early spay/neuter. If yours does, do it whenever you want. You cannot know when a cat will hit puberty, so neutering early can help your cat avoid developing a spraying habit.

At pounds and shelters they spay and neuter at 3/4 of a pound. Can you BELIEVE that?! We're talking about 12oz. 6 months is about the perfect age. They've achieved about 80% of their full size and they generally haven't reached sexual maturity. Neutering is WAY easier and less invasive than spaying and the vet would probably do it a little earlier.
