How can i get my main coon to get along with our new kitten?

We've had a main coon for 2 1/2 yrs, he has always played very rough & is very territorial...We got a new kitten about 5 days ago and she is constently hiding under the couch, when she comes out he stares @ her like he wants to attack, after a minute of watching her he will pounce on her, pin her down & bite her on the front part of the neck while kicking her. We are afraid he is going to seriously hurt her. what can we do?

Maine Coons are usually very playful and accepting of other animals, including dogs. I know because I have one. But, Izzie does play rough. Delilah will hiss and swipe at him and if it gets too intense, a yell from me usually distracts him. Since your MC is so territorial, I assume he is also aggressive. On one hand, he may be telling the kitten what the "rules" are in "his house", but on the other hand, he may be going overboard. You need to keep this kitten in a separate room for a while and not let her out into the house. If your MC is big like Izzie, he could hurt the kitten. Keep the kitten in this room with a litter box, food, water and toys. Go in there every chance you get to play with her and get her scent on you. Play with the MC also. Let her out for short times while you let the MC in the room to explore where she's been and accustom himself to her scent. Even when you let them play, ALWAYS supervise the playtimes. Put him in "timeout" in another room if he gets too rough.
