Cats will stop using the box for a few reasons. One is stress. If you've changed litter, bought a new box or moved the old one, he could be telling you he doesn't approve. Some cats need to have a VERY clean box and litter and don't like to share with other cats. Some even want one for pee and one for poo. They feel most vulnerable when they are using the box, and if he was frightened or interrupted, that could be why. He may also have a bladder infection or impacted anal glands which make it painful for him to use the box. He associates the box with pain and won't use it. Your vet can examine him for either of these or other health concerns that may have altered his potty habits. If he checks out OK health wise, observe him closely for a while to see if there's any indication of why he's not using the box; other animals or perhaps children harrassing him, noise or foot traffic in his "potty area", etc. With a little research, you'll probably be able to determine what's happened.
