I have a 20 year old (in extremely good health, Maine Coon mix. Throughout her life I have noticed that she will find somewhere else to "pee" when her box is aromatic with her own urine smell. I keep her solid waste sifted out (I use Fresh Step crystals), but when her own "ammonia" smell is just starting to waft out of her area...she abandons the box and goes elsewhere, usually close by. Bottom line, her "nose" is better than mine...so I guess she is sending a message - "I dont have opposable thumbs so please clean my box for me!"

Your cat could be sick or old or stressed. Your question is really to general to answer. Talk to your vet and have your cat checked out.
