The Food and Drug Administration has detected salmonella in cat vitamins.
The Hartz Mountain Corp. is voluntarily recalling a lot of its Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to possible salmonella contamination.
Tests conducted by Hartz did not reveal contamination; however, the Food and Drug Administration detected the presence of salmonella in its sample. Hartz has not received any reports of illness due to contaminated vitamins.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain and nausea in both cats and humans. Children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems are particularly susceptible to infection and should not handle the product.
The recall entails 3,600 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats imprinted with lot code SZ-16371 and UPC code 32700-97701. This product should be discarded immediately.
The vitamins were processed by third-party manufacturer UFAC Inc. in Baconton, Ga. Hartz officials said they are aggressively investigating the source of the problem.
For further information on the recall or to obtain a refund, call Hartz at (800) 275-1414.
